SHIPLEY
ARTS FESTIVAL 2004
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Shipley Arts
Festival 2004. We are also delighted to welcome the festival's
first patron, Mark Burrell esq.
The Art Exhibition, Windmill, and concerts, bring together the
whole of the Community to celebrate the arts in aid of local causes.
We are very grateful to our sponsors and friends who continue
to build on the success of this very special region's arts.

Celebrity Classical
Concert

Bernardi Chamber Ensemble

Programme to include: J.S.Bach Concerto for Oboe d'Amore,
Cecilia MacDowall 'Ave Maris Stella', J.S.Bach Brandenburg Concerto
no.4, Howard Goodall Psalm 23.
This very special and popular evening draws together a distinguished
group of the UK's foremost classical musicians who will perform
a programme of music for all the family.
Graham Salter is widely regarded as the UK's foremost oboist.
He is returning this year to perform J.S.Bach's Concerto for Oboe
d'Amore.
Bruce Martin will feature in a performance of John Rutter's Suite
Antique. Flautist Bruce has become a regular visitor to Shipley
and is joined by Andrew Bernardi to perform J.S.Bach's virtuosic
Brandenburg Concerto no.4.
The Addison Singers will join the Choir of St Mary's Shipley
for a very special piece, Ave Maris Stella. This beautiful and
approachable work has been written by leading English composer
Cecilia McDowall. She will be visiting Shipley with animator David
Wordsworth as part of a composer's residency in this year's festival.
The Concert will close with a performance of Psalm 23 by local
film and TV composer Howard Goodall.

Campbell
Burnap Jazz Evening
Wednesday
28th April, 7.30pm - Selsey Arms Pub, Coolham
We are delighted to welcome a return visit by jazz trombonist
and raconteur Campbell Burnap. Campbell is a highly regarded musician
who has played with Acker Bilk and appears regularly on Jazz FM
and BBC Radio 2. His band will join him for this very popular
evening for all the family. Food, fine wines, beers, spirits,
and the company of our most generous landlord Mr Tony Woods will
all be on hand for this special evening.
Entry is free and there will be a collection for the Shipley
Arts Festival Charity. This event is generously supported by The
Selsey Arms and Arts & Business
Youth
Concert
Thursday
29th April, 7.30pm to 9pm - St Mary's Church
Programme to include: Mendelssohn's String Octet (first movement),
Elgar's Serenade for Strings, J.S.Bach Concerto in D minor for
two violins, John Ireland's Concertino Pastorale.
Two of the South of England's leading Youth String Orchestras
combine to provide a very special programme of popular English
music in St Mary's.
Charterhouse has a long tradition of English music with alumni
including Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells. John Ireland's
Concertino Pastorale will be played in the very place the work
was composed.
The Mid Sussex Youth String Orchestra will perform works in preparation
for their intended School's Prom appearance at the Royal Albert
Hall later this summer. The two string orchestras will also combine
to perform Elgar's Serenade for Strings, and Bach's Double Violin
Concerto. This unique evening draws together many of the finest
string players from Sussex, Surrey and abroad. The conductors
will be John Parsons (Head of Strings Charterhouse) and leading
violinist Andrew Bernardi.

A Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for the Shipley Arts
Festival, with choir, organ and congregation in the Sung Eucharist.
The Reverend Pat Sinton and director of music, Peter Sanderson,
welcome everyone to this special service.
Country
House Concert
Saturday 8th May, 7pm -
New Buildings Place
This is the first of Shipley's 'County House Concerts'. Tickets
for this special concert at New Buildings Place must be purchased
in advance of the event. The concert will be in aid of Youth Music.
Young musicians from Trinity College of Music and the Warwickshire
County Youth Viol Concert will perform. The music and instruments
will reflect the setting of this very special Country House and
family.

Art Exhibition
Andrew Hall, Shipley
The Shipley Art Exhibition is an established event in the Sussex
art lovers' calender. It has become the cultural highlight of
the visual arts for many local artists. Talented artists, both
amateur and professional, come ot Shipley from all over Sussex,
to bring a wide spectrum of subjects. Delicious home-made cakes
and tea are available throughout the day and you can combine a
visit to the exhibition with an exploration of the beautiful village
of Shipley. A percentage of the proceeds will go directly towards
the upkeep of the Andrew Hall, Shipley (reg charity on. 306467)
Shipley
Windmill
May 1st - May 3rd, 2pm to
5pm
The windmill is the largest mill in Sussex. It was bought by
the poet Hilaire Belloc in 1905 whilst he was a Liberal MP. The
mill has been restored to full working order and you can visit
this historic building to buy flour, and to see the setting of
Jonathan Creek! The Charterhouse and Mid Sussex String Orchestras
will be making a special visit to the mill on the day of their
concert. In aid of Shipley Windmill Trust.
Church
Tower
May 2nd - May 3rd, 2pm to
5pm
Climb this 11th century tower to view Shipley's Windmill, and
the surrounding countryside which inspired Hilaire Belloc's poetry,
together with the music of John Ireland and Sir Arnold Bax. John
Ireland rests in the graveyard just south of the porch.
