SHIPLEY
ARTS FESTIVAL 2005
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Shipley Arts
Festival 2005. This year's festival is ever wider, encompassing
the two primary schools, an International Youth Music Concert,
a Celebrity Classical Concert at St Mary's, Jazz at The Countryman
Inn and Selsey Arms Pubs, Sung Eucharist, Country House Concerts
at St Cuthman's and Knepp Castle together with the Art Exhibition
and Windmill visits.
The Friends Celebrity Concert at Knepp Castle provides a special
opportunity to enjoy the highest standards in classical music
in an idyllic setting whist helping to secure the Festival for
future generations. This year we are starting The Friends of Shipley
Festival as an attempt to build a more solid base for the future.
We would like to encourage you to join our Friends scheme, and
by attending this concert you will become a 'Festival Friend'.
We are also able to offer a unique CD of past concerts from the
Festival which can be purchased from the festival office, the
box office or at the concerts.
We are very grateful to our sponsors, partners, friends and Patron
Mark Burrell who continue to build on the success of this very

This concert has been the centre piece of Festival for the last
four years. The idyllic setting is where John Ireland rests beside
the Church, and close to the Windmill where Hilaire Belloc lived
and wrote works including 'The Cautionary Tales.'
The Bernardi Chamber Ensemble brings together leading UK instrumentalists
to perform a concert for the whole family - from rich string sounds
to English folk idioms, and sparkling trumpets!

Collection in aid of Tsunami School Appeal
- a Windlesham House School project to educate children from the
Asian Disaster.
Programme to include: Mendelssohn's String
Octet (First movement), Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, Vaughan William's
Greensleeves, Howard Shore's 'Lord of the Rings'
The combined orchestras of Mid Sussex Youth String Orchestra
and Copenhagen's Spring Strings perform a popular programme at
The Malden Theatre Windlesham House School near Washington on
the A24. This international exchange will bring together a special
cultural and youth music exchange between Copenhagen and Shipley
West Sussex with players as young as five up to musicians who
hold scholarships at our major conservatoires. The event is generously
hosted by Windlesham House School. The evening will be introduced
and conducted by Andrew Bernardi and Mette Hanskov. Mette is Principal
Bass of the Royal Danish Opera Orchestra, and Director of Copenhagen's
'Spring Strings.'
Children's Concerts
Members of the Festival's Chamber Orchestra will perform with
the children in workshop concert visits to the Parish's Primary
Schools - Shipley Primary School, and William Penn School, Coolham.
The event will be announced by the schools headteachers, Mr Ashley
Holt & Mrs Anne Watson.
These concert workshops will take place in the last weeks of
March.

Good Vibes at Countryman

Cool Jazz for the Discerning Listener

Country House Concert

We are very grateful to Charlie and Issy Burrell for hosting
the first 'Celebrity Friends Concert' with leading musicians from
the festival's ensemble. The musicians perform a popular programme
to include music by Mozart, Ravel, Scott Joplin and Cole Porter
in aid of the 'Festival Friends.'
Early booking is advised. One ticket for £25.00 enrols you as
a 'Festival Friend.' The 'Festival Friends' will provide a firm
basis for the Festival's future and fundraising. We will hold
an annual party and festival preview in January for all the Friends.
Campbell
Burnap Jazz Evening

It brings us great pleasure to welcome Campbell Burnap for a
third year - jazz trombonist, raconteur and Jazz FM presenter.
We are very grateful to Mr Tony Woods for hosting this evening

Music Sunday

Our director of music Peter Sanderson together with The Rev Pat
Sinton lead a sung service of Holy Communion with special hymns
prayers and anthems performed by the congregation choir and string
orchestra as a thanksgiving for the gift of music.
Country House Concert
St Cuthman's Chapel and Retreat, Coolham

Programme to include music by John Ireland,
J.S.Bach and Wienawski.
Maria Redman and friends from the surrounding area perform music
including John Ireland, in a celebration of this very special
retreat. We are grateful tothe diocese of Arundel and Brighton,
Karen Goldsmith and the community of St Cuthman's for hosting
this concert in this very special retreat house. Maria Redman
is an outstanding young pianist who is currently embarking on
an international concert career whilst maintaining and winning
prizes alongside her undergraduate course at Trinity College of
Music.
Barn Dance with the
Bismarcks

Art Exhibition
Andrew Hall, Shipley
This exhibition features a collection of work by regional and
local artists. These works of art will be available for viewing,
or for sale in aid of the Andrew Hall charity. (reg charity no.
306467)

Shipley Windmill
The windmill is the largest mill in Sussex. It was bought by
the poet Hilaire Belloc in 1905 whilst he was a Liberal MP. The
mill has been restored to full working order and you can visit
this historic building to buy flour, and to see the setting of
Jonathan Creek!
