Arts Festival 2006
‘International Class Music and Art at the grass
roots of West Sussex’
Patrons: Gavin Henderson CBE Mark Burrell Esq
Box office 01403 741 782
Thank you for your continued support of this essential part
of Sussex arts. We welcome our second patron this year, Gavin
Henderson. Gavin is Chief Executive of Trinity College of Music
now Trinity Laban. He was awarded the CBE in 2005 for his outstanding
contribution to music.
Our Arts Festival has met its five year plan and grown from a
concert in aid of the ‘Dan Pope Memorial Fund’ to
a Festival of the community with an international level of artistic
achievement. The schools concerts have led to string teaching
being re-established at both William Penn and Shipley Schools.
The Countryman and Selsey Arms have been fabulous hosts to both
Campbell Burnap and ‘Good Vibes.’ Knepp Castle and
St Mary’s have hosted professional chamber music concerts
celebrating and developing our rich heritage of English music.
The communities of St Cuthman’s, Charterhouse, Windlesham
House Prep School and the Earl and Countess of Lytton have made
strong links with Trinity College of Music’s and this region’s
music students. The Bismarks Dance was a welcome addition to the
festival last year. The long established Art Exhibition, Windmill
Friends, and music events form what one audience member descried
as ‘an International Class Festival at Grass Roots Level.’
The festival has donated over £15000 to good local causes,
and we are very grateful for the support and fun we will have
with the new ‘Friends of Shipley Arts Festival’ group.
This year’s festival moves forwards with these themes plus
the formation of Shipley Arts Festival Choir, and the ‘Musical
Feast’ to be held at Sedgwick Park with co promotion by
Rotary International. We are also delighted the Christ’s
Hospital’s Big Band will be playing at the Musical Feast,
together with Mid Sussex Youth String Orchestra whose pupils who
represent all the regions schools. The central Classical Church
Concert on April 29th will further develop English music with
works by John Rutter, John Ireland, J.S.Bach, Gordon Giltrap,
performed by our resident professional orchestra, and the newly
formed Shipley Arts Festival Choir.
It was a great pleasure to host the first Festival Friend’s
party in January, and please do contact us should you like to
become a Festival Friend.
We wish you a very enjoyable festival season of music art dance
school’s performances and the Coolham and Shipley Fete.
Yours,
Andrew Bernardi
