We are delighted to welcome you to the Shipley Arts Festival 2007. The Festival continues to grow and enjoys support at county level for the second year running. We welcome the Rt Hon Francis Maude MP as Patron, together with our other patrons Mr Mark Burrell and Mr Gavin Henderson CBE.

This year internationally renowned composer Cecilia McDowell has accepted a commission for a new "approachable" work based on our local cultural setting. The premiere will be performed at the St Mary's Church Shipley Celebrity Classical Concert on 5th May. Music by Elgar, whose 150th anniversary falls this year, will feature at the Three Choirs Concert at St Mary's Billingshurst, as well as at the Country House Concerts in Newbuildings Place and Chesworth House.

Our links with Trinity College of Music continue during the Recital at St Cuthman’s on 6th May and in the Celebrity Classical Concerts, and we welcome the return of Campbell Burnap and his Jazz Band to the Selsey Arms and the Stardust Hotshots to the Countryman Inn. We are pleased to have extending our reach into the parishes of both Billingshurst and Nuthurst, and to have been invited to perform in the historic tudor chapel of Chesworth House. We are also delighted to play host to the London Welsh Rugby Football Club Choir at Shipley Church on 21 April.

We are indebted to all of our Festival Friends, musicians and instrumentalists as well as to our sponsors "Arts & Business", HDC, WSCC and "Marketing Leaders Ltd". We also look forward to celebrating Youth Music with Anthony Huthings' Educational Spectacular for Children at Windlesham House, and are priveleged to be able to share with you the continuing growth and success of the Shipley Arts Festival.

March 19th 7.30 pm Malden Theatre, Windlesham House School: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Concert by the West Sussex Music Support’s ‘Mid Sussex Youth String Orchestra,’ and postgraduate brass students of Trinity College of Music. There will be an interactive demonstration of the instruments, plus prizes for best dressed pirate or sea person. You could also find yourself invited to conduct the orchestra!

April 17th 7.30 pm onwards. Jazz with dinner. The ‘Stardust Hotshots’ perform at The Countryman Inn, Shipley – Le Routier Pub of the Year 2005. Tables can be reserved for a minimum cost of £8.00 per seat, and you can enjoy the excellent hospitality of Alan Vaughan. This very popular evening can take reservations on 01403 741383

April 21st 7.30 pm St Mary’s Shipley: The London Welsh Rugby Football Club Choir Concert. Musical Director Michael Wyn Jones takes a night away from singing with the BBC Singers and directs this fabulous choir, which is being promoted by Shipley resident and singer Mr Bob ‘s Mountney. The evening will reflect the Church’s current restoration programme involving the conservation of the beautiful stained glass windows.

May 5th 7.30 pm St Mary’s Shipley Church ‘Celebrity Classical Concert’: This Concert is where the Festival originated and from where it has grown over the past six years. There will be a programme to include the Festival’s first World Premiere commission by Cecilia McDowell. A new approachable Concerto for violin and two flutes will be based on Belloc’s Tales. The programme will also include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no.4. Additional English music will include local Fittleworth composer Sir Edward Elgar in celebration of his one hundred and fiftieth birthday. A popular concert for all the community with some of the UK’s leading performers, and at an International level of performance and composition.

Bernardi Chamber Ensemble, Linda Coffin, Bruce Martin Andrew Bernardi and conducted by Nic Pendlebury.

Tickets are £15.00 with concessions of £10.00 for students under 18, and refreshments will be available.

May 6th 5 pm. St Cuthman’s Retreat: The Festival continues its links with the UK’s premier music Conservatoire. Trinity College of Music Students from junior Department, senior and postgraduate departments perform at this Country House Concert. Junior Department String Quartet, and soloists Jesse Beaumont Maria Redman, Victoria Rawlins return by popular request. Music by local composer John Ireland, Sir Edward Elgar, William Walton and also wider repertoire.

Tickets limited to sixty are £15.00 with concessions, and refreshments will be available.

May 12th 7.30 pm New Buildings: Country House Concert 'A Night in Old Vienna' hosted by the Earl and Countess Lytton. International class musicians perform music to celebrate the style and elegance of eighteenth century Vienna, alongside the dance music of the Strauss family. A popular programme will include Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate, Pizzicato Polka, The Laughing Song from Die Fledermaus, and performed by returning artists virtuoso bassist David Hayes with soprano Sarah Poole. Please bring your mask for the ball!

Tickets are limited to forty to be reserved in advance and priced at £20.00, and refreshments will be available.

May 12th We are delighted that Steyning Music Club are again performing in association with the Festival. They will present ‘The London Conchord Ensemble.’ Emily Pailthorpe oboe Daniel Pailthorpe flute Julian Milford piano will perform a recital.

May 19th 7.30 pm St Mary’s Billingshurst: The ‘Three Choirs Concert’ including Horsham Chamber Choir, Amici Singers, and a return visit by the Addison Singers, together with Choral Directors Stephen Buckman, Zoe Peate and David Wordsworth. Music to celebrate English composers Elgar Gavin Bryars, Parry and more, with kind permission of Rev. Brian Pritchard

May 20th 4 pm Afternoon Celebrity recital at Chesworth House: The concert will take place in the Tudor chapel attached to Chesworth House which is of historical importance and has been beautifully restored by the present owners. Chesworth was once the home of Catherine Howard, the 5th wife of Henry VIII. Music will be played to celebrate one hundred and fifty years of one of Sussex’s most distinguished past resident composers Sir Edward Elgar. The programme will include Mozart’s Flute Quartet, Arthur Foots Flute Quartet, and favourite tunes including Salut d’Amore by Sir Edward Elgar. Tickets are £25.00 and limited to sixty. Tea will be served in the Concert interval. Early booking is recommended for the very special concert in one of Horsham’s most beautiful private houses.

May 23rd 7.30 pm Campbell Burnap and quintet make their annual Coolham appearance by popular request at the Selsey Arms Coolham, with generous hospitality from our very own Mr Tony Woods. Campbell and his players are leading exponents of traditional jazz, and regular raconteur and presenter on Jazz FM. Tables can be reserved on 01403 741537.

June 11th 12.30 – 5 pm Sedgwick Park Open Day in aid of St Andrews’s Church of Nuthurst and Manning’s Heath.

A day for the family to enjoy including side shows, live string quartet in Sedgwick Park Ball Room., music, excellent entertainments teas and refreshments and generously hosted by John and Clare Davidson. We welcome you to the many attractions that you will enjoy.

July 15th 6.30pm, Concert for St Andrew's Church, Nuthurst

Bernardi Chamber Ensemble, Conductor Nic Pendlebury soloists: Linda Coffin Bruce Martin and Andrew Bernardi

A concert to bring the community together to celebrate local and Internationally based musicians with a view to celebrating mainly local music in this fabulous church. Featuring local composers Vaughan Williams (his Tallis Fantasia), Sir Edward Elgar (performing his Introduction and Allegro in his 150th anniversary year) , together with a new approachable work based on Hilaire Belloc and local people poetry and the backdrop of Nuthurst and Shipley. This concert brings the Festival to a close, and extends the core values of the Shipley Arts Festival. We are very grateful to West Sussex County Council’s Rural Arts programme for support which has enabled this concert to take place and for St Andrew’s Church to enjoy this International Level Classical Concert. The Festival is also grateful to Rev David Evans and the PCC, with particular mention to Eve Mauchel, and Sue Hempstead.

June 16th Windlesham House School

Earth, Wind and Fire...plus Water!

Windlesham House School aims to raise the awareness, plus significant funds for a children’s hospice during a huge outdoor multi-media extravaganza of performing arts, education and entertainment. The Summer Fun Day is set for Saturday, 16th June 2007 and will be the most ambitious event ever held by a school in the UK.

Brainchild of Anthony Hutchings, Director of Music at Windlesham House School, The theme of the day is elements… and will focus on earth, wind, fire and water, telling the story of how the idea of the four elements emerged in ancient Greece. Anthony Hutchings will link groundbreaking technology and the help of leading figures in the entertainment industry, with performances on a rock concert stage from a cast of hundreds of children.
